This study examines whether Philippine resilience has improved across major crisis episodes while distinguishing financial stability, output recovery, and return to a pre-crisis growth path. Independently assembled World Bank annual data for 1970–2025 support a comparison of the 1983 debt crisis, the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, and the 2020 pandemic. A common event framework measures annual contraction, peak-to-trough real GDP decline, recovery of previous output levels, and deviations from extrapolated pre-event paths. Supporting annual regressions examine associations between global growth deceleration, lagged external buffers, and Philippine growth. The 1980s episode recorded a 13.41% peak-to-trough GDP decline, compared with 0.51% during the Asian Financial Crisis and no annual output decline during the Global Financial Crisis. COVID-19 recorded the largest single-year contraction, 9.52%, despite substantially stronger pre-event external buffers. GDP exceeded its 2019 level in 2022 but remained 18.77% below the five-year pre-pandemic reference path in 2025. Large reference-path shortfalls persist across alternative specifications for the debt crisis and pandemic, whereas smaller shortfalls for the other episodes are sensitive to baseline selection. Stationarity tests challenge buffer-level regressions; buffer-change interactions are imprecise, and an era comparison does not establish weaker sensitivity to global slowdowns after 1993. The findings qualify a general resilience narrative: improved absorption of some financial disturbances coexists with vulnerability to severe real shocks and prolonged output shortfalls. The design identifies historical patterns and conditional associations rather than causal reform effects.
