Bedside Handover and Nursing Care Outcomes in Selected Private Hospitals

Effective nursing handover is essential to continuity of care, patient safety, and accurate clinical communication, yet bedside handover remains inconsistently implemented because of workload, interruptions, privacy concerns, and differences in institutional practice. This study examined bedside handover practices and their relationship with perceived nursing care outcomes in selected private hospitals in Batangas. A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was employed. Quantitative data were obtained from 130 full-time registered nurses using a researcher-developed and expert-validated questionnaire, while qualitative data were drawn from open-ended responses provided by 20 nurses. Descriptive statistics, Spearman's rank-order correlation, and thematic analysis were used. Respondents reported a high level of bedside handover practice (M = 4.54) and favorable overall nursing care outcomes (M = 4.64). Patient safety practices and communication effectiveness obtained the highest means (M = 4.71 each), followed by quality of nursing care (M = 4.60) and continuity of care (M = 4.55). Bedside handover practices were significantly related to quality of nursing care (rho = .589), patient safety practices (rho = .548), continuity of care (rho = .539), and communication effectiveness (rho = .407), with all relationships significant at p < .001. Nurses valued real-time verification, continuity, situational awareness, and patient involvement, but identified time pressure, interruptions, privacy concerns, communication barriers, and inconsistent ISBAR use as constraints. The findings indicate that structured bedside handover is associated with favorable nursing care outcomes but requires consistent institutional support, protected handover time, training, privacy safeguards, verification procedures, and compliance monitoring.
